Gottfried Jäger

Born in 1937. Lives and works in Bielefeld, Germany.

Born in Germany in 1937, Gottfried Jäger is now recognized as one of the greatest names in German photography.

In the Experimental Photography Tradition. Since the programmatic exhibition Generative Fotografie in 1968, Gottfried Jäger has belonged to a European tradition of photo experimentation, especially prevalent in Germany with the Bauhaus in the twenties, the Subjektive Fotografie in the fifties or the Photo School of Kassel since the seventies. He may be seen as the bridge between the golden age of German photography in the twenties and the new generation. Gottfried Jäger has published many books about the history of experimental photography, including the English translations: The Art of Abstract Photography (2002), Concrete Photography (2005) and the last one Light Image and Data Image. Traces of Concrete Photography (2015). He has not only curated a show for the 150th anniversary of photography focused on the history of photo experiments: Photo as Autonomous Picture. Experimental Form 1839-1989 but also dedicated entire books and exhibitions to some of the masters of photo experimentation: Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Heinz Hajek-Halke, Carl Strüwe. One of the last exhibitions he initiated, Carl Strüwe in the Context of Contemporary Photography (2012) is an example of Jäger’s program: bringing to light the relevance of historical approaches for contemporary artists. Jäger was close to the Swiss group of Concrete Photography, especially with René Mächler (1936-2008). This relation to Concrete Art has become stronger since the collector Peter C. Ruppert asked him to be the photography adviser for his museum collection Concrete Art in Europe After 1945 in Würzburg (Germany).

Links to Conceptual Art. Gottfried Jäger uses experimentation to redefine the objectivity of the photographic process. A parallel can be drawn between his works and those of Bernd and Hilla Becher, and the conceptual art of the 1970s. Gottfried Jäger has been close to the theorist Vilém Flusser whose articles in the 1970s and 1980s were influential for the conceptual artists that used photography. Flusser wrote two articles about Gottfried Jäger’s work. In 2001, Jäger published a book about the impact of Vilém Flusser on contemporary art and theory: Fotografie denken. Über Vilém Flussers Philosophie der Medienmoderne. He also edited a book about Timm Ulrichs in 2012: Fotografieren verboten and has included photographs by John Hilliard, Jan Dibbets, and Timm Rautert in photo history collections that he has published since the 1970s.

Computer-Based Image. Gottfried Jäger has been part of some of the most iconic exhibitions around technical- and computer-art made in the 1960s: Experiments in Art and Technology at the Brooklyn Museum, NYC (1968); New Tendencies in Zagreb (1969) and of the show On the Path to Computer Art that traveled around many countries (Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Brazil, France, England) between 1970 and 1976. He has been exhibited with the most famous German computer-artists: Frieder Nake, Georg Nees, and Herbert W. Franke with whom he has also edited two books: Generative Fotografie (1969, with co-author Karl Martin Holzhäuser) and Apparative Kunst. Vom Kaleidoskop zum Computer (1973). He published several articles about his work in Leonardo, the American magazine about computer art; and at the end of the 1960s he was represented by the Clarissa Gallery in Hanover that supported ‘generative’, avant-garde photography, and artists associated with computer art like the those of GRAV and Art et Informatique.

Theoretical and Scientific Work. Since 1998, Gottfried Jäger has been the executor of Carl Strüwe’s work. He created the Carl-Strüwe-Archives in Bielefeld, published three books about his work (1982, 2007 and 2012) and organized three solo exhibitions (1966, 2012 and 2015). The books he wrote and the exhibitions he curated have always been related to his own work and main themes. Gottfried Jäger has published more than thirty books, included in English: The Art of Abstract Photography (2002), Can Photography Capture our Time in Images? A time-critical Balance (2004), Concrete Photography (2005) and the last one Light Image and Data Image. Traces of Concrete Photography (2015). These books were about several topics: the experimental, abstract and concrete photography, the relation of art and science, the photography in Germany… Gottfried Jäger has also curated several exhibitions: group and solo shows, about contemporary and historical photography, included most of the time some of his own photographs.

Learning and Teaching. Gottfried Jäger studied at the Staatliche Höhere Fachschule für Photographie (National Higher College for Photography) in Cologne (1958-1960). From 1960 to 1972, he was teaching photography at the Werkkunstschule (WKS) Bielefeld. In 1963, he became Professor at the University of Applied Science Bielefeld, where he reminded until 2002. There he set up the graduate program Photo-/Film-Design in 1979 and created the Focus on the Research and Development of Photography and Media at the University of Applied Science Bielefeld, in 1984, the first and only one in Germany.

Prizes. In 2014, Gottfried Jäger won the Cultural Award from the German Society for Photography, a prize that some of the most eminent photographers has also been awarded: Stephen Shore (2010), Wolfgang Tillmans (2009), Ed Ruscha (2006), David Hockney (1997), Man Ray (1966), August Sander (1961), or Albert Renger-Patzsch (1960). In 1996, he received the David-Octavius-Hill Medal from the German Academy of Photography. Some other recipients of it were Dieter Appelt in 1999, Joan Fontcuberta in 1988, and John Hilliard in 1986. These two prizes not only crowned Jäger as an eminent photographer, but also established him as a distinguished photo theorist and historian.
